Bernie Sanders postpones Saturday Iowa City appearance, Cory Booker to make UI stop Monday
October 2, 2019
Monday two Democratic presidential hopefuls announced updates to scheduled visits around the Iowa City area.
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., is postponing his tentative trip to Iowa “until further notice” due to a medical procedure done Tuesday. After feeling chest discomfort at a Nevada event Tuesday, a medical evaluation found Sanders had blockage in an artery and had two stents put in.
Sanders was originally scheduled to participate in a forum in Iowa City on drug overdose in Iowa City on Saturday. Sanders had been the only candidate to confirm he would be attending the forum, co-hosted by the Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition, AIDS United, Drug Policy Alliance, and Harm Reduction Coalition this weekend. According to the webpage of the event venue, The Englert, the entire forum has been postponed.
“Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates,” wrote Sanders’ Senior Advisor Jeff Weaver in an emailed statement.
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., will hold a town hall Monday, Oct. 7 at the Iowa Memorial Union. His stop by the University of Iowa is part of a four-day swing through Iowa Oct. 6-9 that includes stops in seven other counties in central and eastern Iowa.
Also on Monday, Booker will make two stops in Cedar Rapids in the early evening. In September, the Booker campaign made a plea for donations in order to stay in the race. By the campaigns’ self-imposed funding deadline, they met their $1.7 million goal in nine days.
