The Iowa City police investigation into the events that led to Hawkeye wrestler Sam Stoll being shot has concluded.
According to a police release, after consultation with the County Attorney’s Office, a criminal complaint of “false report to public entity” was filed against Stoll on June 29. The release said no further charges are expected to be filed.
On June 19, authorities responded to an emergency call in the early morning hours in which Stoll was hospitalized after suffering an accidental gunshot wound to the knee. The release on June 19 said that several individuals were at the Valley Avenue residence when the incident took place.
In 2018, Stoll was an All-American for the Hawkeyes. He placed fifth at the NCAA Championships and also placed fourth at the Big Tens. Stoll racked up a 25-6 record in 2018 and led the Hawkeyes with 10 pins (his win total ranked third on the team).
On June 20, Hawkeye wrestling head coach Tom Brands released a statement reading: “Sam Stoll underwent successful surgery yesterday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and has since been released. He is doing well, and that is great news. His health was our No. 1 concern. We are still gathering information, and once the police investigation is complete, we will follow all university and Athletics Department Code of Conduct policies.”
