Local woman wanted in connection with theft
Authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of an Iowa City woman in connection with a theft case.
Tiara Woods, 31, 713 E. Jefferson St., is suspected of second-degree theft and two counts of forgery occurring in June 2015.
According to the affidavit, Woods went to Carousel Nissan on June 27, 2015, in Iowa City and bought a car with a stolen check. The check was written for $1,500, the affidavit said, and Woods forged the victim’s signature on it, telling the car seller the person on the check was her mother, for whom she is buying the car.
A few days later, Nissan found out the check was stolen, the affidavit said, so they didn’t give Woods title or registration for the vehicle and told Woods to come back with the car.
Nissan told Woods she did not own the car, the affidavit said, and needed to pay $1,500 to keep it. Woods told the dealership she needed to drop off her kids and get the cash, the affidavit said, but she never came back.
The victim has never met Woods or gave her permission to use her checks, the affidavit said. In 2014, the victim told officers, her credit union accidentally sent her new checks to the wrong address, causing them to end up in Wood’s hands.
The victim said Woods has been arrested before for forging her checks, in April 2014.
Second-degree theft is a Class-D felony.
