The Iowa women’s swimming and diving team started out the 2017 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in West Lafayette, Indiana, on Wednesday night by making history.
The relay team of sophomore Meghan Lavelle, senior Emma Sougstad, freshman Hannah Burvill, and junior Mekenna Scheitlin set the Iowa school record in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:38.99.
The time, however, was only strong enough to place seventh. Minnesota placed first, Indiana second. The Hoosier squad included Olympic gold medalist Lilly King.
Day 2 of the event will start at 11 a.m. today. Sougstad will battle Indiana’s King once again in the 200 individual medley. Burvill will race in the 50 freestyle.
