One Iowa City Catholic church encourages discussion during this presidential time.
The Newman Catholic Center doesn’t persuade members to vote one way, but issues still arise in conversation.
“We deal with life issues,” said priest moderator Father Steve Witt. “Life and death, immigration, prejudices, those kinds of things because they deal with what they gospels teach and that’s what we’re about – what Jesus taught us.”
As a clergy, Witt said he didn’t see the need to endorse a candidate as a church.
“We believe in the primacy of the individual conscience,” he said. “We talk about how their conscience, views, the things that are of concern.”
