Man charged after smashing car taillights with glass bottle while naked

A local man has been charged after he allegedly smashed the taillights of a car with a glass bottle while naked.

Sean Flaherty, 42, was charged Wednesday with third-degree criminal mischief after officers said they witnessed him trying to get into cars and hitting cars with a bottle.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Flaherty had bloodshot, watery eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol.

Flaherty smashed the taillights of three different cars in the parking lot located at 714 Westwinds Drive. He told officers he was breaking the red in the taillights because red means danger to the republic, the complaint said. Flaherty said he did not know the owners of the cars he damaged.

Officers estimate the damage to the vehicles to be around $600.

Third-degree criminal mischief is an aggravated misdemeanor.
