An Iowa City man has been charged with second-degree theft and forgery after he allegedly deposited a number of fake checks at an Iowa City bank.

Christopher Curtis, 23, was charged March 29 and April 16.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Curtis deposited a check for $4,500 into his account at an Iowa City MidWest One Bank on March 29. The check was later returned to him because of an “irregular signature” — a proper signature failed to be found on the front. The check was then returned to Curtis before being redeposited on April 15 in a different ATM.

Over the following three days, nearly all the money was withdrawn from the account before again being returned for “irregular signature.” Curtis also misspelled the name of the banking institution.

Iowa City police officers spoke with Curtis by phone, and he allegedly admitted to depositing the check and withdrawing the money. He said he was going to contact the bank and repay the money but failed to do so, according to the police report.

Officials later determined that the check was fraudulent. Total loss to the bank stands at $4,431.05.

Forgery and second-degree theft are Class-D felonies.
