City accepting community development block grant applications

Additional funding allocations for low-to-moderate income residents in Iowa City will soon be available.

The city is now accepting applications for a total of $250,000 in Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnerships Program funds to aid income-restricted residents in housing, service, and job offerings.

The applications — which must be submitted no later than noon Friday — include $140,000 in block grant and $110,000 in HOME funds.

The subsidies are granted according to the needs and priorities outlined in the city’s 2011-2015 Consolidated Plan.

Applicants are encouraged to contact Community Development staff officials Tracy Hightshoe or Steve Long in discussing their desired project before submitting an application.

The City Council will approve the budget and selected projects at an Oct. 1 meeting after a 30-day public hearing.

Projects are not able to start until after this date.

Eligibility covers rental, owner-occupied, tenant-based rental assistance, and rehabilitation housing projects as well as public facility or economic-development activities such as new construction, acquisition, and rehabilitation.
