Sunday afternoon’s early game showcased the two remaining undefeated teams in the 2013 Prime Time League. Jarrod Uthoff and Anthony Clemmons’ team squared off with Zach McCabe and Gabe Olaseni’s team.

McCabe’s 25 points, in addition to Olaseni’s 22, was just enough to edge their fellow Hawkeyes, 95-93, and improve to 5-0 on the summer.

“It was a pretty good game; we had two undefeated teams trying to win,” McCabe said. “It got a little too close at the end, I think, but everyone played pretty well, I thought.”

Olaseni slammed a dunk with under four minutes remaining in regulation to propel his team to a 91-79 lead, but Clemmons responded with 5-straight points — including a 3-pointer from well beyond the arc — to bring the deficit to within 7.

After a pair of free throws from Olaseni’s teammate Joey Woods, Dondre Alexander hit a pair of treys on back-to-back possessions to bring the score to 93-90.

Olaseni then iced the game with a 2-point put-back and pumped his fists in jubilation.

“Right now, we know what each other can do,” he said. “It’s just getting easier and easier.”

Jok, Woodbury roll

Adam Woodbury took the ball up the center of the court, drove the lane, and kicked the ball out to teammate Peter Jok, who was waiting on the right side of the key. Before a second could pass, Jok elevated off the ground, flicked his wrist, and netted his fifth 3-pointer of the night.

It was just one of those days for Jok and his teammates, who handily beat Mike Gesell’s team, cruising to a 107-92 win.

What was a close match in the first half — a 20-16 score just seven minutes in — quickly turned into a blowout. Jok led all scorers with 33 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists on 13-of-19 shooting.

Gesell finished with 24 points, 16 assists, and 9 rebounds. Gesell’s teammate, and former William Penn player, Keith Steffeck led all scorers with 36 points — including a crowd pleasing slam dunk just minutes into the game.

Gesell’s team fought back hard in the second half, cutting what was a 20-point deficit in the first half to 62-55 after two minutes had passed in the second. The team later brought the deficit to 79-71.

But each time Gesell’s team closed the gap, Jok responded with a dagger 3-point shot that ultimately put the game back out of reach.

Woodbury showed the importance of working on free throws; the center went to the line 14 times throughout the game and made 10. His teammates worked hard to find him in the paint, but Iowa walk-on Okey Ukah and teammates continually collapsed on Woodbury and prevented him from getting good looks underneath the basket. Woodbury still managed to finish with a double-double, on 18 points and 16 rebounds.

“It is what it is; they have to play me somehow,” Woodbury told The Daily Iowan on July 1. “I expect physical play every time I step on the court, and I’m going to see that every night in the Big Ten.”
