A part-time employee of the UI College of Law’s writing and resource center is appealing to the U.S. Court of Appeals for a new trial.
Teresa Wagner was denied full-time employment in 2006, and she claimed it was because of her political affiliation and past employment. She filed a lawsuit against the former dean, Carolyn Jones, in January 2009.
Wagner claimed she was discriminated against for having conservative political opinions and working for associations that oppose same-sex marriage, abortion, and euthanasia.
On Oct. 24, 2012, a jury found that Wagner’s First Amendment rights were not violated but was unable to reach a decision about whether she was denied equal protection under the 14th Amendment.
Wagner was denied a new trial on March 8 and filed her appeal on March 18.
