Iowa women’s gymnasts lose a close one to Illinois

A week removed from a first-place finish against Michigan State and Illinois-Chicago, the Iowa women’s gymnastics team looked to have some momentum going into the Feb. 16 meet against Illinois. The GymHawks hoped to break the 196 overall scoring mark.

Their outing, however, was only good enough to tie their season best score of 195.875 in a close 195.975-195.875 loss to to the Illini. Sophomore Sydney Hoerr was a bright spot for the GymHawks, scoring a career high 39.350 in the all-around competition, which earned her second place.

Hoerr garnered this honor with a strong performance on bars, in which she scored a 9.9 and tied for first place with Illinois’ Sunny Kato. This also led the team to its season-high score on bars, 49.2.

The GymHawks also earned a season-high score on the vault, 49.225. Freshman Kyra Trowbridge and sophomore Emma Willis posted high scores for the Hawks, both earning scores of 9.875.

Trowbridge posted a strong performance on the floor once again, tying her score of 9.9 from last weekend’s meet, and the team scored a 49.150. The balance beam proved to be tricky for the GymHawks once again. Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Alie Glover fell off the beam, earning a score of 9.150 and sophomore Jessica Morreale earned a 9.

“We haven’t gone backwards yet,” head coach Larissa Libby said in a release. “Every week, we make steady improvement. While it’s disappointing to not come home with a win; the score counting a fall is impressive.”
