Official cause of Iowa City dental lab fire determined

Iowa City fire investigators completed their investigation on Thursday of a fire that occurred Tuesday at 1515 Jackson Avenue and determined that an unattended pot of oil in an apartment unit caused the blaze.

The Daily Iowan previously reported that a woman living in the back of the building housing the Dental Lab reportedly fell asleep while cooking French fries. The flames eventually engulfed most of the building, causing extensive damage. No one, according to reports, was injured.

A total of 34 firefighters were on scene to help put out the fire, including officials from the Iowa City Police Department, the Johnson County Ambulance Service, Mid-American Energy, and the American Red Cross.
