GymHawks fall to ranked Buckeyes

After a season-opening win against Ball State last week, the Iowa women’s gymnastics team (1-1, 0-1 Big Ten) traveled to St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, on Jan. 19 to compete in its Big Ten opener against Ohio State (2-1, 1-0 Big Ten).

Despite the GymHawks’ improving their overall score from the previous week, the No. 21 ranked Buckeyes proved to be too much, and the Hawkeyes lost, 194.925-194.200.

The GymHawks showed score improvements in each of the four events, finishing with 48.750 on both the bar and floor events. Vault proved to be the best event for the Hawkeyes, in which they posted a 49.050.

Sophomore Emma Willis’ score of 9.900 was strong enough to win her first place in the event. Even with the strong performance by Willis, the Buckeyes squeaked out a 49.075-49.050 win in the event.

Beam continued to be the area inwhich the Hawkeyes struggled, scoring only a 47.650 for the event.

Next weekend, Iowa will travel to Pennsylvania for its second Big Ten meet against Penn State.
