The Iowa wrestling team will hold wrestle-offs this weekend, which will play a role in who starts the season in each of the 10 weight classes.
The tournament kicked off on Thursday with a single match. Redshirt freshman 149-pound Patrick Rhoads defeated classmate Jake Kadel in a 15-6 major decision.
Rhoads tallied six takedowns, one reversal, and earned a riding-time point to win the decision. He’ll now face sophomore Mike Kelly in the 149-pound semifinals today.
Wrestle offs will continue at 4:30 p.m. today and at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the Dan Gable Wrestling Complex in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Today will feature matchups between two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough and Matt Gurule at 125 pounds and All-American Ethen Lofthouse and Alex Meyer at 184 pounds.
Tony Ramos (133), Mike Evans (165), Grant Gambrall (174), and Bobby Telford (heavyweight) are among the wrestlers who will see the mat on Saturday.
