Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller and 54 attorneys general announced Thursday that they reached a $69 million antitrust settlement with three of the nation’s largest book publishers, according to a press release from the Iowa Department of Justice.

Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, and Simon & Schuster have agreed to pay more than $69 million to consumers to resolve antitrust claims, the release said. The publishers also agreed to change the way in which they price e-books.

Concurrently, a civil antitrust lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against that Hachette, HarperCollins, and Simon & Schuster, among others, “conspired and agreed to increase retail e-book prices for all consumers.”

“We alleged that some of the largest publishers in the market fixed prices on e-books,” Miller said in the press release. “This case sends a message that undermining competition unfairly takes money away from consumers, it threatens our free market, and it’s something we just won’t tolerate.”
