Intramural basketball: Chris Brown staves off Dunk N Go Nuts

Adam Netwal faced a crowded lane before him as he dribbled down the court.

He needed to drive through numerous male and female Dunk N Go Nuts defenders to score. He did just that, tearing through the opposition — who quickly scattered away from the man in the Kevin Durant jersey — and laid the ball in the basket.

Netwal couldn’t keep his domination up for the whole game, though, as his teammates on Chris Brown’s (1-0) used frequent substitutions in their 39-34 win over Dunk N Go Nuts (0-1) at the Field House on Tuesday.

The final score was close, but the game was in Chris Brown’s favor for the majority of the time. Dunk N Go Nuts began the game on a 4-0 run, which was the last time they had total control; Netwal was a key component in this, as he penetrated the lane for layups, contributed rebounds on both ends of the court, and easily blocked several shots.

This led to a quick 14-2 run.

"We really played really well as a team, especially since this was our first time playing together all year," said Chris Brown’s captain, Chase Wallace.

Dunk N Go Nuts managed to create a 9-0 run in the last two minutes that brought the game to 22-19 at halftime. The team switched to a zone defense that managed to keep the Chris Brown’s from scoring, and all of the 9 points were from downtown.

"The zone helped us, because we’re missing our star 6-7 guy," Dunk N Go Nuts captain Nathaniel Gier said. "We also started moving the ball a bit better."

The second half was a different story entirely; a Wallace free-throw pushed the lead to 27-24, and neither team scored for the next five minutes.

Defense was the story of the long scoring drought, as both teams rebounded well and prevented the other from taking second-chance shots. Offensively, both teams were settling for outside jumpers and the first available shot.

Finally, with four minutes remaining, the Chris Brown’s drained a 3-pointer that began a 10-0 run for a comfortable enough lead to relieve Netwal and Wallace.

Dunk N Go Nuts saw this as an opportunity to bring the game closer and went on their own 10-0 run to bring the game within 3, but it was all futile. The Chris Brown’s managed to score a layup off a missed free-throw rebound, the game’s final basket, and a Netwal steal closed the book.

But the Dunk N Go Nuts said they will remain positive as they look towards the rest of the intramural season.

"We lost, but we’re going to win our next game," Dunk N Go Nuts’ Amanda Jones said. "People better watch out; I feel sorry for the team we play next week."
