A first round victory over fourth-seeded Arizona State on Monday advanced the Iowa men’s golf team to a quarterfinals showdown with 12th-seeded Colorado State in the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Tournament.
Colorado State posted a 2-2-1 upset over fifth-seeded UCLA.
The second round was cut short because of darkness with the Hawkeyes trailing, 2-1-2. Junior Brad Hopfinger and sophomore Barrett Kelpin won their individual matches, 2-and-1 and 1-and-0.
Despite a two-hole lead, junior Vince India dropped his individual match 2-and-1, and the Rams nabbed a 3-2 victory.
The lose sent the Hawkeyes to the consolation bracket, where they played top-seeded Stanford. Hopfinger and Kelpin each led their matches from start to finish, which makes the duo undefeated going into the fourth round.
A 3-and-2 victory from India and a tie from sophomore Chris Brant sealed the 3-1-1 win — the second upset of the tournament for the Iowa golf team.
The Hawkeyes will take on sixth-seeded UNLV in the final round of tournament play this morning.
