The Iowa women’s tennis team (10-2) left Indian Wells, Calif., with a 2-0 record following a 4-3 victory over No. 33 Tulsa (13-5) on March 20.
The Hawkeyes gained momentum early, snatching the doubles point from the Golden Hurricanes for a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Sonja Molnar and junior Merel Beelen defeated Alexandra Kichoutkin and JoAnne Karaitiana, 8-4. Junior Jessica Young and senior Kelcie Klockenga also won their match against Anastasia Erofeeva and Ewa Szatkowska, 8-5, which was enough to give the Hawkeyes the first point of the match.
The Hawkeyes split singles play with the Hurricanes.
Molnar continued her winning streak over top-notch competition, this time against Tulsa’s Kichoutkin (6-3, 6-1). Beelen earned Iowa a team point on her 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 victory over Erofeeva.
Junior Alexis Dorr secured the Iowa win after she beat Tulsa’s Michelle Farley in a three-game set (6-4, 3-6, 6-3). Dorr’s victory improves her singles record to 11-1 this season.
Iowa also defeated Wichita State on March 18, 6-1.
The squad will return to the Hawkeye Tennis & Recreation Complex on Saturday to face Michigan (11-3).
