The Iowa Hawkeyes announced on Thursday that former running back and current radio analyst Ed Podolak will be the team’s honorary captain on Saturday for Iowa’s game against Arizona at Kinnick Stadium.
As a player, Podolak was the team’s captain and most valuable player during his senior season in 1968. He rushed for 286 yards in a game against Northwestern that same year.
In addition to his 1,710 career rushing yards, the Atlantic native also played quarterback and had 2,316 career passing yards.
In the NFL, Podolak played for the Kansas City Chiefs and set a playoff record that has yet to be broken, posting 350 all-purpose yards in a battle against the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 25, 1971.
Podolak will join the current team’s captains at midfield for the pregame coin flip and will be in the Hawkeyes’ locker room before and after when he’s not on the air with play-by-play broadcaster Gary Dolphin.
