Behind 37 points from incoming Iowa freshman Jaime Printy, Active Endeavors/McCurrys was able to defeat Coralville Hy-Vee on Thursday night in Game Time League action, 93-82.
Printy was able to weave her way around defenders all game long and get inside for numerous lay-ups and close-range jump shots. She also showcased her outside game, going 4-for-6 from the perimeter. The ability to shoot from outside kept her defenders off balance the entire night.
The quick dribbling and pull-up jump shot combination that proved so effective is something Printy has been focusing on so far this summer. Playing point guard, she was able to get her own shots as well as distribute the ball around the court. Without much time to install an offense, coach Gary Altman appreciates the player he has running the show.
“When you do this kind of stuff you really don’t have any kind of time to put an offense in,” he said. “It’s nice when you have a player who can break players down off the dribble as Jaime does and hit the 3, so they can’t back off of her and try to take that away. She has really developed her game … and because of that I think she is really going to contribute to Iowa.”
Only one other Iowa player for next season was on the court. Morgan Johnson, a 6-1 incoming freshman, was the tallest player on the court and helped Hy-Vee stay close for most of the game. She was able to muscle her way inside several times on her way to 24 points and 11 rebounds. The point total tied her for the team lead with Morgan Paige of Marion High School and she tied Kalli Hansen of Kirkwood Community College for the game high in rebounds.
Hawkeye juniors Kachine Alexander and Kelsey Cermak for Hy-Vee and senior JoAnn Hamlin for Active Endeavors/McCurrys all missed the game because of preparation for the Hawkeyes’ upcoming summer camp on Friday.
Johnson did struggle at the free-throw line, missing all five of her charity-stripe attempts, leading her to criticize her own performance a little bit.
“I played decently,” Johnson said. “There were a couple shots I should have made, especially free throws that I should have made. I just gotta make sure I finish stronger at the basket.”
Overall, despite missing three Iowa players, the game turned out to be a nice showcase of what may lie ahead for future Hawkeye teams. Playing against other college players in the summer can only benefit Printy as she gets used to the quicker college game.
“It’s really good for me [to play in the Game Time League] to make the transition to college,” she said. “It’s a lot different from high school.”
The next game for Active Endeavors/McCurrys will be June 23 against L.L. Pelling/Cullen Painting, a squad that features Hawkeye sophomores Hannah Draxten and Kelly Krei, as well as incoming freshman Trisha Nesbitt.
Coralville Hy-Vee will face off against Goodfellow Printing/Imprinted Sportswear, which includes Hawkeyes Kamille Wahlin and Shante Jones, on the same night. Both games start at 6 p.m. in the North Liberty Community Center.
