Q: “Why aren’t any of the crosswalks in downtown Iowa City equipped with beeping signals for blind pedestrians?”
A: Though this has been an issue that has been looked at in the past, Iowa City transportation planner John Yapp said to his knowledge, citizens haven’t recently raised this concern.
Yapp said the city does have “high-visibility” crosswalks that beep when their buttons are pushed to help vision-impaired people.
Officials would consider the move if citizens request it, he said.
Having the “high visibility” meets the requirements of the American with Disabilities Act, he noted.
