Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., called for Iowans' help to get the Democratic nomination, and said he would phase in his "Medicare-for-All" plan in four years.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., drew one of the largest crowds at the Des Moines Register Political Soapbox of the weekend, rivaling the audience of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.

Sanders referenced his previous trips to Iowa in 2016, and reemphasized many of his similar policy points on the Soapbox stage, calling on Iowa for help to win the Iowa caucuses and the Democratic nomination.

“I need your help to win the nomination and defeat the most dangerous president in the history of this nation,” Sanders said, labeling the President Trump a racist, sexist, homophobe, and religious bigot, and pathological liar to a big cheer from the crowd.

Many people in the crowd held up signs and cheered along with Sanders.

Off the bat, Sanders declared he would make universities and colleges tuition-free and cancel student debt.

Before him, Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., said he disagreed with Sanders’ free-tuition and debt-forgiveness plans in response to a question of how he would address rising cost of college. Bennet said he would rather invest in free preschool for everyone rather than free college.

Sanders also called for government-run single-payer health insurance system, declaring that his plan would be phased in in a four-year period. He added that seniors would get access to eye care and dental care.

Sanders railed against climate change, calling it a national security threat. He said there would be “irreparable damage” if climate change wasn’t addressed and said he would stand up to fossil fuel companies.

The independent senator added that to pay for many of his proposals, he would put a tax on “Wallstreet speculation.”

Sanders called for comprehensive immigration reform and criminal justice reform.

After talking with reporters, Sanders bought a corndog at the fair surrounded by fairgoers and media.
