Iowa City Council Candidate Jason Glass poses for a portrait during an interview on Monday, Oct. 4, 2021.

Serving in public office is an onerous task that requires making personal sacrifices and taking blistering criticism for the greater good of the community.  Thankfully, there are a number of good candidates this year that have risen to the challenge. I am pleased to see newcomer Krista Burrus running for a seat on the ICCSD school board.

As an education data scientist, she would bring a fresh and data-driven perspective free of pre-existing biases and political allegiances.  She is friendly, approachable, and has a keen interest in how education affects our students as they graduate and enter the workforce. I’ve enjoyed getting to know her, and I think she’d be an excellent addition to Ruthina Malone and the rest of the board team.

In the Iowa City City Council race, I am excited to see Jason Glass throw his hat in the ring. Jason is a friend from the Hawkeye Marching Band and already serves his community on the Human Rights Commission, the National Guard, the Iowa City Community Theater, and by teaching Human Resources at the University of Iowa.

I enjoy hearing Jason’s perspective on complicated issues as he takes a meticulous and analytical approach to problem solving. I always learn something new from him and his voice will be a great addition to the Council with the departure of Councilor Mims.

Support Krista Burrus for the ICCSD school board and Jason Glass for Iowa City City Council. Our community needs their fresh perspective at the table.
