UI professor accused of domestic abuse assault

A University of Iowa professor has been accused of domestic abuse assault. 

Inara Verzemnieks, 46, 15 Parsons Avenue was charged Sept. 27 with domestic abuse assault. 

According to the arrest affidavit, Verzemnieks assaulted her husband inside their residence. At around 9:23 p.m. Verzemnieks and the victim were both intoxicated and got into an argument. According to the affidavit, Verzemnieks pushed the victim into the wall, and the defendant dialed 911. Verzemnieks pulled the victim by his shirt, and kicked him, and the victim’s shirt was pulled from his torso. The victim and Verzemnieks separated after a struggle and law enforcement arrived. According to the affidavit, the victim had blood on his nose and cuts and scratches on his torso, neck, and right arm, and Verzemnieks had a small cut on her toe. Both declined medical attention at the scene. 

Verzemnieks is an associate professor in the department of English. 

Domestic abuse assault is a simple misdemeanor.
