Nunge, Hawkeyes looking to bounce back against Golden Eagles

Jack Nunge hasn’t made a field goal yet this season, but he’s hoping to change that against Oral Roberts on Friday.

Despite filling out Iowa’s new gold script uniforms with a 6-11, 245-pound frame against DePaul on Monday, Jack Nunge was easy to miss.

The Newburgh, Indiana, native missed a jumper in the paint on the Hawkeyes’ first shot attempt, and he didn’t look the same for the rest of the game.

Nunge finished without a point, going 0-for-2 from the field in only 10 minutes of action despite starting.

Nunge hasn’t seen a shot from the field go through the net in Iowa’s first two games, but he’s looking to change that when the Hawkeyes take on Oral Roberts on Friday.

“I haven’t made a field goal on the year, so I think it’ll definitely help if I can [score],” Nunge said. “I think if I can get an easy bucket, like a layup, a dunk, something like that.”

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said Nunge has been lighting it up in practice, noting his shooting percentage, assist-to-turnover ratio, and his ability to crash the offensive glass.

Still, Nunge has looked hesitant after misses.

Ryan Kriener played well when he took over in the frontcourt, scoring 13 points on 5-of-5 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. His performance and efficiency played a key role in Nunge only seeing 10 minutes on the floor.

Sitting on the bench and watching a teammate do what he couldn’t likely didn’t help Nunge’s confidence, but McCaffery said he’s encouraged the redshirt sophomore to keep shooting.

“You can’t miss a three and then not shoot again,” McCaffery said. “You have to shoot five more. He’s a really good 3-point shooter. Some guys have that innate characteristic in them. He’s a guy that he’s an efficient team guy, and if he’s missing a 3, he’s not going to keep firing. He’s just got to do [it].”

Just as Nunge’s trying to bounce back after a tough outing, so is the rest of his team.

A 93-78 dismantling at the hands of DePaul is still fresh in the Hawkeyes’ minds. Iowa’s defense proved to be poor in the loss to the Blue Demons, turnovers were committed too often, and few players shot consistently from the field.

The matchup against Oral Roberts won’t be a cakewalk for the Hawkeyes.

The Golden Eagles own a 2-1 record on the season, beating Houston Baptist, 95-81, while losing to Oklahoma State by five and Tulsa by seven.

Oral Roberts’ starting lineup features three players scoring in double figures, led by Deondre Burns, who averages 16.7 points per game and scored 21 against both Oklahoma State and Houston Baptist.

Emmanuel Nzekwesi, a 6-8 big man, also serves as an important piece as well, averaging 14.7 points and 7.7 boards per game.

“They play at a good pace, they run good stuff, they’ve got multiple guys that can score,” McCaffery said. “It’s not like you can say, ‘OK, we can lock into these two guys; we can stop them.’ They’ve got a lot of different players that can score.”

When the Golden Eagles fly into Carver-Hawkeye on Friday, Iowa knows it has the chance to prove its loss to DePaul was a fluke.

That’s exactly what it’s looking to do.

“You’ve got to look at it as one game and look at it as motivation and be able to fuel yourself to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” forward Luka Garza said. “It’s not a feeling you want. It’s not the taste in your mouth that you want after a game.”
