Iowa volleyball head coach Bond Shymansky has been placed on a 30-day paid administrative leave for an NCAA rules violation, Iowa Athletics announced Monday.

The UI notified the NCAA on Monday as well, and the investigation is still ongoing.

Because Iowa only let the NCAA know about the violations on Monday, Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta said he couldn’t comment on the violation itself.

Barta noted multiple times, however, that Shymansky’s violations are “significant” and speculated they would fit in the 1-2 major violation range according to the NCAA Division-1 Infractions Process.

“I won’t talk specifically what it was, but I’m comfortable enough to say that everybody who works in college athletics is very familiar with where this line is that can’t be crossed,” Barta said.

The decision to place Shymansky on administrative leave came about on May 1, Barta said, when an unnamed former student-athlete came forward with allegations that Shymansky had violated NCAA rules.

On May 3, Barta said, Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel Carroll Reasoner reached out to law firm Bond, Schoeneck & King to begin an outside investigation. The firm then arrived on campus on May 6 to begin its investigation, which is still ongoing. Barta also said the NCAA will now begin its investigative process.

After notifying the rest of the volleyball coaching staff, as well as the current student-athletes and recruits, Barta announced associate head coach Vicki Brown will serve as the interim head coach.

“You’ve all heard us talk about ‘Win, Graduate, Do It Right’ – something we take seriously and something that’s very important to me and to us collectively,” Barta said. “Clearly, in this case, we have an employee who came up short on the ‘Do It Right’ part.”

Barta speculated the 30-day administrative leave is consistent with what he knows the violation is and Shymansky’s contract.

Law enforcement agencies have not been involved, Barta said, because the situation is specifically focused on NCAA rule violations.

There is no timetable for when the investigations will wrap up.

Despite not commenting on the exact infractions Shymansky committed, Barta said it’s a serious matter.

“What I can’t do right now is talk specifically what’s going on, and it’s because it’s an ongoing investigation,” Barta said. “It’s serious. It’s something that we brought in outside investigators to assist us. We had no notify the NCAA… Eventually, when the NCAA comes out with its report, it will all be in there.”

Iowa volleyball finished last season with a 15-16 record, including a 7-13 mark in conference play. Shymansky also led the Hawkeyes to their highest ranked win in history, toppling No. 6 Wisconsin, 3-2, on Oct. 6.

Shymansky arrived in Iowa City after a five-year stint as the Marquette head coach, where he was a two-time Big East Coach of the Year.

The Hawkeyes open the season Aug. 30 against Stony Brook in Harrisonburg, Virginia, as part of the James Madison Tournament.
