Iowa City man allegedly punched woman in the face

Authorities have accused an Iowa City man of punching a woman in the face.

Maurice Lewis, 39, was charged April 27 with third and subsequent-offense domestic-abuse assault, child endangerment, and interference with official acts.

According to the arrest affidavit, Lewis is homeless and staying at various residences along with the woman and her children. Lewis allegedly admitted to punching her in the face, making slap movements with his hand. Seven children witnessed the assault.

Officers let Lewis finish his cigarette before arresting him. When Lewis found out that he was to be arrested, he reportedly attempted to run away and was tackled by officers.

Third and subsequent-offense domestic-abuse assault is a Class-D felony.
