Coralville man accused of hitting numerous vehicles while driving drunk

Authorities have accused a Coralville man of driving while intoxicated.

Francis Gakinya, 37, was charged April 20 with failure to provide proof of financial liability, failure to install an ignition-interlock device, driving while under suspension, operating without interlock device, third-offense OWI, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, and unsafe backing on a highway.

According to the arrest affidavit, he drove while intoxicated, hitting his neighbor’s car with his vehicle.

Gakinya left the scene, informed the owner of the vehicle, and neglected to fill out a report of a motor-vehicle accident.

Gakinya then reportedly drove to Hy-Vee, hitting several more vehicles on the way. He is required to use an ignition-interlock device.

Third-offense OWI is a Class-D felony. Failure to install an ignition-interlock device is a Class-D felony.
