The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety received reports of a sexual assault that occurred Wednesday at an East Side residence hall.

The report indicated an acquaintance perpetrated the assault.

The email reminds students that the perpetrator of sexual misconduct is the only person responsible and states that it is a violation of UI policy to “engage in sexual activities without clear consent from your partner.” The UI noted in the statement that someone incapacitated due to alcohol or drugs cannot consent to sexual activity.

Additionally, the UI suggests victims seek medical attention immediately, even if there are no obvious physical injuries. Doing so does not obligate someone to an investigation, the email notes, but preserves evidence in the event someone chooses to do so at a later time.

The UI encourages those who believe a crime has been committed to call 911 or the UI police at (319) 335-5022. Students may also make a UI policy complaint through the UI Office of the Sexual Misconduct Response Coordinator.
