DITV: Community members express concern over Labor Center closing

Samantha Austwick

The University of Iowa this past summer closed the state’s only Labor Center. As students and faculty came back for the fall semester, many spoke out about the beloved Labor Center’s closing. It’s been at the UI for 67 years and has bettered the lives of many working-class people. The Labor Center has offered classes to educate those on workers’ rights, has helped teach workers how to negotiate fair treatment, and has aided workers to uncover millions of dollars missing from paychecks. Many citizens came out in support Monday evening to share their stories on how the Labor Center has affected their lives and why it is a crucial facility in Iowa. On Sept. 14 at 9:15 a.m., there will be another meeting followed by a press conference to continue the discussion about the Labor Center.
