Authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of an Iowa City man on a forgery charge.

James Dobbins, 29, 2250 Taylor Drive, is suspected of forgery.

According to the arrest affidavit, officers received reports of someone attempting to transfer the title of an Illinois vehicle that had been reported stolen in Iowa City.

The person trying to transfer the title presented an ID with Dobbins’ name and picture, the affidavit said. The employee of the motor vehicle registration office told Dobbins he needed a signature from the seller, the affidavit said, and Dobbins came back an hour later with a signature.

When officers checked with the owner, the affidavit said, she said she did not know Dobbins, had not given a signature, and was not selling the vehicle.

Forgery is a Class-D felony.
