After a year without a permanent leader, the University of Iowa College of Public Health will soon see a new dean.

On June 1, Edith Parker will begin her role as dean of the College of Public Health, the UI announced Tuesday.

Parker has been a professor and chair of the UI Department of Community and Behavioral Health since 2010. She leads the UI Prevention Research Center for Rural Health, which is one of 26 applied public health research centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the UI’s announcement.

Parker is also the director of community outreach and engagement for the UI Environmental Health Sciences Research Center, as well as the associate director for community engaged research in the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.

“Edith is widely recognized and admired for her innovation and leadership to engage and inspire communities in efforts to improve population health and address health equity,” UI Interim Provost Sue Curry said in the announcement. “Her outstanding work in this area, which is central to public health, as well as her established record of success as a top researcher, educator, and administrative leader will make her an exceptional dean for our College of Public Health.”

Keith Mueller has served as the interim dean of the College of Public Health since April 2017, replacing Curry, the former dean. Curry took over the UI executive vice president and provost position on an interim basis last year until the UI could find a replacement. Mueller will resume his position as chair of the Department of Health Management and Policy.
