The University of Iowa issued a Hawk Alert at 5:25 p.m. on Saturday warning of shots fired near the corner of Linn and College streets.
The alert said shots were fired from a black Toyota Camry with an Illinois license plate. It warns users to stay away from the area. An update on the UI emergency website said public safety officials are assessing the situation and more information will be available soon.
UI Public Safety public-information officer Hayley Bruce said officers have checked the area, but have not located anything.
A press release from the City of Iowa City said officers spoke with many people in the area who said they heard what sounded like gunshots, and at this time no victims nor evidence has been found.

RELATED: August Ped Mall shooting not a random act
In the early hours of August 27, a shooting between non-locals took place near the Sheraton Hotel in the Pedestrian Mall. The incident left two with gunshot injuries and one dead.
The shooter, Lamar Wilson, 23, faces charges of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, and three counts of intimidation with a dangerous weapon — Wilson will use the “stand your ground” defense in his trial starting January 22, 2017.
If convicted, Wilson faces life in prison without the possibility of parole on the first-degree murder charge.
There is no evidence that suggests these two events are related or tied to similar motives.
This story will be updated as it develops.
