The Iowa men’s golf team made it a priority to get off to a fast start this weekend, and that’s exactly what it has done: It sits in second place after the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

The Hawkeyes are at 5-under 283, while North Carolilna State is in the lead at 14-under.

Junior Walker and sophomore Schaake led the way for Iowa, both shooting 2-under 70 and putting the duo tied for eighth overall, just 4 strokes out of the top spot.

“We didn’t play as well as we should have last week,” Schaake said in a release. “To come out here and put four solid rounds together feels good for us and gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow. We know this course, we’ve played it a few times, and we put ourselves in a good position.”

Sophomore Ryoto Furuya continued his hot streak from last week, shooting 1-under, followed by sophomore Benton Weinberg (even) and senior Sam Meuret (2-over).

“It’s a solid start, but we have room for improvement,” head coach Tyler Stith said in a release. “I am proud of the fact we didn’t count a score over par. We really enjoyed the support today from the Cedar Rapids Country Club membership and Hawkeye fans.”

The Hawkeyes will tee off at 11 a.m. today with North Carolina State and North Carolina-Wilminton.
