An Iowa City favorite

Hamburg Inn, an Iowa City favorite lunch destination, sells a pie shake that has been a phenomenon since its opening in the late 1940’s.

The beloved pie shake is made through various steps.

First, it starts with an apple pie made by a local Amish bakery down the street.

After that, fresh 2 percent milk and high quality vanilla ice cream get added in (along with the secret ingredient).
However, a new owner is taking over Hamburg which could mean a new recipe for the shake.

“My goal is that a month or two month from now, if someone came in who didn’t know about the sale of the restaurant, they wouldn’t be able to tell the difference,” general manager Seth Dudley said.
