DITV: Emotional support animals

DITV%3A+Emotional+support+animals
Emotional support animals are becoming an important part of people’s lives who struggle with depression or anxiety, including those who attend the University of Iowa.
Luna is a cat living in Iowa City with Maddie Dietz and her roommate and provides support for them both.
“College is hard,” junior Dietz said. “We both struggled a lot last year in school, out of school, just a lot of things colliding all at once that made for a really stressful time.”
Emotional support animals are different than therapy pets.
“An emotional support animal is not a pet, it’s a companion,” said IC Animal Center supervisor Liz Ford. “It’s not an animal that provides therapy to other people.”
Adoptions for cats like Luna and other animals can be made at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.
