Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving has become associated with intense retail shopping. While this year, some retail chains are looking to start a new holiday tradition, local stores will be sticking to Black Friday sales.

National stores such as Costco, Nordstrom, Staples, Marshalls, REI, Home Depot and more have opted to close during Thanksgiving as opposed to opening late and offering sales throughout the night. This is in an effort to give their employees time to celebrate the holiday.

In Iowa City, Revival 119, Catherine’s Boutique, and Velvet Coat will be having sales throughout Black Friday and into Small Businesses Saturday.

“It’s actually gotten more popular in the last couple of years just to be downtown versus the mall on Black Friday but our big event day is really Small Business Saturday,” said Anna Wickes, director of marketing at Revival 119.
