UI student Mason Beezley fills up a car with gas on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at the Kum and Go on East Burlington in Iowa City. The price of gas is currently $2.43.

Gas prices are at a record low and some experts are calling it a trend in Iowa and the rest of the country.

According to a recent report by GasBuddies.com, a site that directs drivers to the cheapest prices, the national average price for a gallon of gas is now $2.42.

This lower average is 20 cents less than last month and this time last year,.

In Iowa, a gallon of gas is only $2.39, according to AAA.com, even less than the national average.

Iowa has different regulations and receives gas from different refineries than neighbors like Illinois, which could be one reason gas here is running slightly cheaper.

Leading up to the winter holidays, the price of gas is expected to drop even further still to under two dollars a gallon.
