Authorities have accused an Iowa City man of fleeing the scene of a car crash because he had been drinking.

Herbert Mather, 53, was charged Aug. 1 with third-offense OWI.

According to the Iowa City police, officers were called to the scene of a car crash, where witnesses were following the fleeing driver.

Mather was caught by police, and he reportedly told them, “I did a hit and run. I didn’t want to get in trouble.”

He admitted to drinking and blew a .143.
