Professor pay gap still exists in Iowa

The pay gap between men and women continues to be a issue in Iowa, including among professors who teach at Iowa institutions. 

The American Association of University Professors reported this month that female professors at the UI now make 87 percent of what their male counterparts do, up from 85.3 percent in 2014.

The UI’s pay for women has risen by approximately 2 percent, while other universities have not experienced such an increase.

The trends at University of Northern Iowa are similar to the trends at the UI. At UNI, women’s salaries have gone up but not by much; the pay increase for women has increased by 1 percent.

An annual report by the Chronicle of Higher Education shows that last year, women were paid 92.3 percent of what men made, while this year, women are being paid 93.2 percent of what men make.

Though these numbers have slightly increased for women at the UI and UNI, they have decreased for women at Iowa State University.

Last year, women professors at ISU reportedly made 97.2 percent of what men made. Now, women make 95.2 percent of what men make.
