Holzhammer passes at 92

Former Iowa public address announcer Reverend Canon Robert E. Holzhammer died Tuesday, March 24 at age 92.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 11 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. The family is also welcoming friends to a celebration of Holzhammer’s life at Paul Brechler Press Box in Kinnick Stadium from 1-3 p.m. on the same day.

Holzhammer began calling Iowa football games in 1974 and also began basketball announcing the same year. He retired from basketball announcing in 1999 and football a year later.

He was also honored in 1989 by the National Iowa Varsity Club and was a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Varsity I Club.

Before his time spent calling sporting events, Holzhammer served parishes at several cities throughout Iowa, eventually coming to Iowa City in 1962.

Known as ‘Father Bob,’ he us survived by his son, daughter, six grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Trinity Episcopal Church or to the University of Iowa Foundation.
