Fire damages downtown apartment

An apartment building under construction in Iowa City’s Peninsula neighborhood caught fire late Wednesday night, effecting the building’s basement and first floor.

The Iowa City Fire Department was dispatched at 10:55 p.m. to 2161 Willenbrock Circle, according to a Thursday morning news release by the department.

The fire spread rapidly and caused the ground-level floor to fall through. A total of firefighters fought the fire and after 90 minutes were able to bring it under control. Firefighters stayed at the scene for another three hours, the release said.

No injuries were sustained and the cause is currently under investigation by the Iowa City Fire Marshal’s office.

The estimated cost to the building is $200,000.
