Man charged with controlled substance

Authorities have accused a local man of possessing marijuana packaged to sell.

Derrick Lewis, 26, was charged July 23 with possessing or distributing a taxable substance without a tax stamp and a controlled-substance violation.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers pulled over a brown Acura RL in a traffic stop.

There was a strong odor of marijuana in the vehicle, the complaint said. A K9 search was conducted on the vehicle.

During the search, authorities allegedly located 14 plastic bags of marijuana packed for sale and two larger bags of marijuana.

Lewis told officers the marijuana was his, the complaint said.

Possessing or distributing a taxable substance without a tax stamp is a Class-D felony. Controlled-substance violation is a Class-D felony.
