Parents sue School District in wheelchair incident

The parents of a child reportedly injured in a wheelchair accident are suing the Iowa City School District, according to court documents.

Bradley Kaldahl and Soon Ryang, both of Iowa City, are the parents of a quadriplegic, wheelchair-bound teenager diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Kaldahl and Ryang contend that their daughter was not properly secured when traveling on a school bus in May 2012. Allegedly, video shows her wheelchair sliding around the bus.

The girl’s parents say she suffered a head injury and a broken tooth after the bus hit a bump and her wheelchair flew forward to the floor.

Kaldahl and Ryang are suing Durham School Services, which provides bus transportation for School District, and bus driver Devonnas Reed for negligence. They are also suing the School District for negligence through its contracted transportation company.

The family are seeking damages and a jury trial.
