Man accused of driving drunk after crash

A local man has been accused of driving under the influence.

Matthew Bauler, 27, was accused on Feb. 27 with third-offense OWI.

According to a North Liberty police complaint, Bauler was operating a silver 2004 Audi vehicle when he crashed and wrecked the vehicle.

Bauler walked to 1700 Stone Creek Circle in North Liberty and beat on the door, yelling for help, the complaint said.

The resident called 911. When an officer arrived at the scene, Bauler had on one shoe and the matching shoe was found under the brake pedal. Bauler had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and had a scent of consumed alcohol, the complaint said.

The officer asked Bauler for a breath sample; the defendant consented and gave a weak breath sample with a blood-alcohol content of .204. Bauler was unable to perform standard field sobriety tests due to injuries.

Bauler was taken to the hospital, the complaint said.

Third-offense OWI is a Class-D felony.
