Five West High School female students have been charged after allegedly getting into a fight on a school bus Monday afternoon.

Kerene Mausa, 20, Coralville, and Situ Mausa, 18, Coralville, were charged Wednesday with disorderly conduct.

The other three defendants in this case are juveniles, and their names have not been released.

Coralville Police Chief Berry Bedford said the fight occurred between 3:45 and 3:50 p.m. The bus was driving on First Avenue in Coralville.

Bedford said the incident began as regular school-bus behavior.

“You know how kids are,” he said. “They’re talking a lot, and they’re having a good time and jabbing each other a little bit verbally.”

However, he said, shortly, the tables turned.

“It wasn’t just a typical pushing-and-shoving-type thing,” he said. “It was real blows being thrown.”

The driver pulled into a local Hardee’s parking lot and was able to break up the fight.

Bedford said the students claimed the fight was insignificant.

But a later investigation and viewing of bus surveillance video revealed the incident was much more physical than previously thought.

“It was significantly more and actually very dangerous because it was right up by the driver,” Bedford said. “It could’ve caused the driver to have an accident or more people could’ve gotten hurt, and I think with all that was going on, the driver handled it well.”
