Iowa City man charged after committing his third OWI

An Iowa City man has been accused of committing a third OWI.

Lee Heilig, 22, was charged Oct. 19 with third-offense OWI.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, officers were called to McDonald’s, 804 S. Riverside Drive, after receiving reports that a man drove his truck into a gate near the Dumpster.

When officers arrived they spotted Heilig behind the wheel of a truck. There was red paint residue on the truck, which was identical to paint on the gate.

There was significant damage to the gate. Heilig had slurred speech, watery and bloodshot eyes, and admitted to drinking five beers before driving.

He said he had wanted to park the truck in order to call a cab.

The result of his Datamaster test was .194. Heilig has previous OWI convictions on Aug. 26, 2009, and Aug. 2, 2010.
