Iowa City man charged after stealing money from a refrigerator

An Iowa City man has been charged after allegedly stealing money from a refrigerator.

Joshua Demuth, 29, was charged May 18 with third-degree theft.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Demuth was at a South Linn Street party where he was seen by witnesses, while the resident was not home.

During the party, Demuth was observed by others as being in the resident’s bedroom.

When the resident returned home, his locked refrigerator had been broken into and $550 was missing along with a few other items, the complaint said.

During a police interview, Demuth allegedly admitted to taking the money and used it pay rent but denied taking any additional items in the apartment.

Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor.
