Iowa City woman charged after depositing fraudulent checks

An Iowa City woman has been charged after allegedly depositing fraudulent checks into her bank account.

Shaniqua Smith, 21, was charged on July 10 and 11 with forgery and second-degree theft.

According to a police complaint, on March 7, two fraudulent checks were deposited into Smith’s bank account. The first check was counterfeit and was worth $2,532. The second check was stolen and forged and it was worth $1,462.

Second-degree theft and forgery are both Class-D felonies.
