Portion of Highway 1 near Iowa City Walmart to see closure Wednesday

Area drivers will experience some delays starting Wednesday, when one local arterial road will be reduced to one lane of eastbound traffic.

The anticipated construction of a new refuge island in the median for a new Highway 1 intersection will result in the reduction of eastbound Highway 1 traffic, near the Iowa City Walmart, the city of Iowa City said in a Monday news release.

The construction is expected to take place immediately east of the Highway 1/Westport Plaza intersection. The main entrances for a number of businesses, including Walmart, Westport Touchless Autowash, and Midtown Family Restaurant is served by the intersection.

Normal traffic is set to resume by Friday.

City officials are recommending drivers allow for extra travel time or drive a take a different route while the lane is closed.
